HONED VERSUS POLISHED TRAVERTINE

The most asked question from the visitors of this blog is which one is better? Honed or Polished? At last i decide to write something about this. As a manufacturer and a supplier i think its our responsibility to answer. Many suppliers don’t think much about their products which they had sold. How is it look or is there something wrong with it when it is installed. I have read some forums about this case. And also have knowledge from our customers. We hope this information can be useful to make a decision.

There are two factors which effects the choice of the finish type; look and suitability. First of all it is very important where you install your tile. Then, of course comes its view.

As mentioned before in this blog, a honed tile is half polished. It has a matte look and when you touch its surface you don’t feel any roughness, it’s smooth. You can use this kind of tile in everywhere, walls and floors of kitchens, bathrooms and etc. And don’t need to worry about slipperiness. It is really easy to clean and protect your honed tiles.

Most of the people prefers a shiny and modern look in his/her house. They choose polished travertine tiles and never mind the slippery ground. A polished tile is going to be slippery when it gets wet. That is why we don’t recommend polished kind for especially bathroom floors and around the pools. You can use it everywhere except these places. But also, i know some people who uses polished tiles in their bathroom and don’t complain about slippery grounds.

FINISHES of TRAVERTINE

There are many finishes and options available for travertine stone. Here are the most widely used:

According to their surface;
Filled
- Travertine can be used as all of its holes become filled in with grout or polyester.
Unfilled - Also, it can be used as unfilled without any filling for more natural look.
Polished – Travertine can be polished after filled. A polished travertine floor tile is going to be the most shiny and smooth. The polished and filled finish is suitable for indoors, it might be a little slippery if used outside near a pool.
Honed (Half Polished) – It can be applied to a filled or unfilled tiles surface. A honed surface is going to have a matte look, but it also has a smooth surface.
Tumbled – It can be applied to an unfilled tiles surface. A tumbled travertine floor tile is going to be a highly textured surface with the least amount of shine. The floor tile has rounded edges and a surface that has an aged or ancient look. Tumbled travertine is the most appropriate flooring material for outdoors, especially pool decks and patios.
Brushed – It can be applied to an unfilled tiles surface as in tumbled. Acid washed and wire brushed for a smooth textured surface. Mostly, its used as flooring tile for outdoors.

According to their edges;
Chiseled/Chipped Edged
- All the edges are broken slightly for a more rustic look. It can be applied to a filled or unfilled tile. Chiseled travertine is the most appropriate material for driveways. It is stylish when installed.
Straight Edge - The edges are cut perfectly straight and square. Generally prefered kind with filled and honed surface finish. And mostly used indoors.
Beveled Edge -The edges are cut on a slight angle to create a bevel between the stones when installed.
Pillow Edge -The edges are cut on a slight angle and a little bit rounded to make a soften look.

Travertine decoration materials;
Travertine Borders
- These are pieces that used for decoration. There are various border styles like pen, bullnose and Ogee 1 & Ogee 2. Travertine borders used for both indoors and outdoors. Pen and Ogee1 & 2 mostly used on wall for decorative look.

Mesh mounted mosaics - Small sized travertine pieces mounted on a fiberglass mesh (the interlocking sheet) which generally measures 12”x12”. This fiberglass mesh is glued to the back sides of the tiles. Travertine mesh mounted mosaics used for both indoors and outdoors. Madallion is also a kind of mosaic. It can be in various designs on a bigger mesh (24”x24”).

Basins – Travertine basins produced as filled in various geometrical shapes (square, rectangle, round). Also, it has different designs (mosaic, round edged..). It has an harmony with the other travertine flooring tiles in your kitchen and bathroom.

TUMBLED VERSUS BRUSHED (PATINATO) TRAVERTINE

How many of us know the difference between tumbled and brushed (patinato) travertine tiles? Or how many of us see both types together and manage to ever compare them? I guess not so many. The reason is simple. You need some tiles for your home to install and you think first what you want to buy. At last you decide to buy natural stone. You might see in somebodies house or you came upon when you was searching the internet. I’m sure that many of us are satisfied with it and focus on only that product. Big mistake, big loss! If we saw tumbled or brushed in somewhere, we just want to have it. Why? Because, it was looked great and we have never seen the other type. Why don’t you have a different style in your home?

Tumbled tiles are aged natural travertine. Has rounded edges as a pebble transporting by the sea and river for years having a roundness. Today by the help of the machines and for a short time the same aged look can be provided. The given athmosphere to your home is really fabulous. The ones who have ever been to historical places surely felt the mystic air of the old looking buildings and Turkish baths. May be you didn’t looked at so carefully but when you entered inside, you covered by a different athmosphere. The taken from the tiles by the time – actually it is not taken, given beauty – now you can give to your home as tumbled travertine tiles. Slightly rounded edges, soften natural looking holes and matte and smooth surface.

Brushed travertine in other words patinato travertine tiles, looks like a cheese with holes. Of course its’ holes are not seem so sharp, they are softened because of the brushed surface. Also its’ surface extremely soft and when you touch it you feel its wavy surface like at seas. This effect of brush on the surface provides a different style to travertine tile. After breaking the edges brushing the tiles, reduces the sharpness of the chipped edges and mostly preferred. A chipped edged french pattern set on the floor of your home and you walking barefoot on it …..Choice is yours …..;)
